160. first-in-human (FIH) Clinical trial where a medical procedure or drug candidate, previously developed and assessed through in vitro or animal testing, or through mathematical modeling, is tested on human subjects for the first time. Sometimes described as first-time-in- human (FTIH) and in earlier literature, first-time-in-man (FTIM).
161. first-pass effect The phenomenon where drugs may be metabolized following absorption from the GI tract but before reaching systemic circulation. Generally, this process reduces oral bioavailability of the drug.
162. fit-for-purpose Qualification of a bioanalytical method with scientific rigor for the intended purpose where all applicable parameters may not be evaluated as per regulatory guidance. Also see ‘Tiered approach’.
