SUSTAINABILITY

Sustainability is increasingly associated with quality and integrity in policy and decision-making, and has an important contribution to make to a more cost efficient and resilient public sector.

Our work in this area is designed to help you acquire basic knowledge and skills for the nature of the contribution you may find yourself expected to make. Getting in Touch with the Future and Sustainability – Your Contribution in the Workplace are the programmes that lay the foundations for positive change in your organisation.

Although the scope of sustainability is broad we also work in areas that require expertise and focus. See box below.

Our sustainability programmes can also be delivered in your organisation and increasingly our clients prefer this. Give us a call to discuss your needs.

Sustainability – Your Contribution in the Workplace

A day spent looking more specifically at how to make an effective contribution at work.

We focus on how an organisation uses finite resources and ways in which consumption and cost can be cut, with knock-on reductions in emissions.

You learn to look at everyday service as well as projects through a sustainability lens.

You look at procurement and learn the basics of whole life and life cycle costing.

We encourage you to bring your own questions and cases and work through them in safe learning environment.

Business Cases and Decision Making

You look at how sustainability works in the wider business case ‘green book’ environment. We aim to build the programme around cases you bring.

The programme is aimed at finance officers, accountants, risk managers, economists and senior responsible owners who want to apply robust finance and commercial performance criteria to projects and programmes that have a sustainability component.

We draw together experts, specialists and scrutineers from across government. We look at the issues, challenges, dilemmas and trade-offs and explore room for manoeuvre in a difficult investment environment.

Foundations for Sustainability – a Strategic Introduction

You see sustainability as a high priority leadership topic and want to know more.

You want to understand sustainability beyond ‘single issue’ topics such as carbon reduction.

You want something feistier and more strategic, and you want to explore tough questions about how ‘sustainability’ can work in a wider policy environment.

You will make connections between resilience, sustainability, economics, social psychology, systems thinking, cost efficiency, lean management, democratic renewal and social innovation.

Buying a Better Future – Purchasing as if the Planet Mattered

You want to dig a little further into sustainable procurement. You are quite new to the subject and you want to get a good grounding in what it is all about. Or you are an existing practitioner trying to apply sustainability principles to purchasing activity and running into obstacles.

Either way we aim to move you on during this two-day exercise (lunchtime to lunchtime) the next day.

We plan to encourage you by exposing you to examples across several sectors, and to create some ‘clinic space’ for people to bring casework for group discussion with friendly experts.
