Managing Home Workers

This one-day programme is designed for managers who manage home workers.

The last five years have seen a huge increase in homeworking in government departments. According to the Office for National Statistics, by Spring 2005, 3.1 million people were working mainly from home.

For employers there are a number of benefits including: cost savings on premises and office overheads; increased productivity – numerous reports have indicted an increase in productivity of up to 40 per cent; homeworkers avoid travel time and the interruptions of normal office life; skills retention – staff who might otherwise have left for reasons like moving home can be retained; a more satisfied and motivated workforce; environmental benefits by reduction in the carbon footprint; access to work for people with disabilities.

For employees there are also a number of benefits including: reduced travel time and costs; achieves a better work/life balance; reduced stress levels; less disruption to family life; feeling trusted and empowered by employer; flexible working hours bringing more choice and freedom.

The challenge for organisations is to make homeworking a success. The starting point is equipping the homeworker with the appropriate equipment, furniture and IT and ensuring that health and safety regulations are met. However the main challenge is ensuring that managers of homeworkers have the necessary knowledge, skills and attitudes. Managing staff remotely requires a different skill set to managing co-located staff.

Managing Performance Masterclasses

These discrete masterclasses provide insight into good practice in performance management and are aimed at providing middle managers through to senior civil servants with tips and techniques in managing performance.

Bespoke masterclasses can be tailored for those at all levels of the organisation to acknowledge the varying roles in managing performance issues. So, for example, it is envisaged that those held for senior civil servants will acknowledge the different role of those at more senior levels.

These masterclasses build on comments from the Capability Reviews about performance management across various government departments. They provide an accelerated insight into good practice in performance management with an accent on pragmatic tips and techniques in this vital field of management. Some time will be spent looking at ‘negative cascaded attitudes’ from senior management and the important role model that needs to be reinforced within any culture of managing performance. The masterclasses will also look at key micro skills/attitudes in managing performance levels and ends on avoiding performance apathy.

The masterclasses can last from 45 minutes through to 11⁄2 hours although the depth and scope of learning may reduce in the shorter timeframe. They will be tailored to particular client needs.

Performance Management Workshop

Aimed at senior managers to deal more effectively with issues of under performance. This workshop builds on comments from the Capability Reviews about performance management across various government departments and provides accelerated tips and good practice advocacy in performance management.

It examines both the guidelines which need to be followed in managing performance either on an individual level or across a branch or directorate as well as giving the opportunity to look at workplace managing performance dilemmas.
