Set within the grounds of a stunning 70-acre estate, Priory Bay Hotel has its own beach, tennis courts, swimming pool and, reputedly, the best six-hole golf course in the South of England. Open all year, this historic country retreat is privy to spectacular views across the mainland and East Solent and comprises a medley of beautiful buildings, all restored and stylishly decorated – each of its 18 bedrooms has its own distinctive character. The hotel’s extensive grounds are a haven for fauna, including rare birds, red squirrels and dragonflies. The elegant Regency muralled Island Room offers superb à la carte and six-course tasting menus focusing predominately on seafood, local game and produce sourced from the hotel gardens and woodland. The more informal yet stylish Priory Oyster specialises in fresh fish and seafood and is decorated in warm terracotta tones. Take a peek through the French windows – they open onto a glorious alfresco terrace boasting a vast sea vista.

To dine at Michelangelo’s is to experience a culinary work of art. Authentic Italian cuisine, stunning sea views and intimate, rustic decor all combine to provide a delectable experience on every level. Proprietor Anna Sacchini and partners Dante Poli and Rosanna Pancot have a passion for fine food and wine, which is often expressed through their sumptuous four-course wine-tasting dinners. An Italian sommelier introduces an exquisite selection of best-kept secrets from Italian vineyards, including the intense Brachetto, a sparkling red dessert wine. We enjoyed a refreshing ricotta ball and raspberry salad, followed by mouth- watering pumpkin and cannellini bean risotto and fragrant spiced beef wrapped in cabbage leaves. An impossibly light blend of fig, pear and moist vanilla sponge provided the perfect finale. With a charming deli-café to boot, showcasing Italian delicacies, Michelangelo’s is a masterpiece among restaurants.
