The Duke’s Head is a favourite venue amongst locals in the know. The welcoming look of its exterior – framed by flower baskets and outside tables – is continued inside, where you’ll find comfy seating and cosy fireplaces. All in all, it’s a quintessentially charming country tavern. If, however, you’re expecting the menu to feature the usual pub fare, think again. Instead, you’ll find classics with a modern twist. You can tell the chefs here are passionate about utilising Hampshire’s rich larder – they only use fresh, local produce wherever possible. The juicy steak topped with crispy bacon and blue cheese is a to-die-for dish, as is the chilli with grated cheese. With events held throughout the year (including special Burns Night and Valentine’s Day menus), the Duke’s Head is the type of pub everyone wishes was their local – indeed, even if you don’t live in Romsey, this establishment is definitely worth taking a trip for.

This timber-framed thatched cottage was built in 1627 and transformed into a deluxe small hotel and restaurant in 1991. Now thought to be one of the oldest thatched buildings operating in this way in the UK, it is certainly a stand- out venue in which to wine, dine and stay. Every inch is imbued with charm, character and warmth, from the individually decorated guest rooms to the comfortable restaurant. The chefs here are dedicated to cooking with integrity, creating ‘market fresh’ and ‘farm to table’ menus that showcase the best local produce and let the ingredients’ natural flavours do the talking. You can even learn how to rustle up your own locally sourced delights by taking one of the Thatched Cottage’s culinary courses. Weather permitting, delicious organic pizzas are served alfresco from the wood-fired oven. Those simply after a coffee or tea are welcome too – their famous afternoon tea is definitely a must-try.

Nestled amongst glorious countryside, this 17th-Century inn is every bit the traditional English village pub; charmingly rustic through and through. The landlord is great with his customers, resulting in a loyal set that visit time and time again. The vine-covered terrace and log fire are distinguishing features, and the menu is altered weekly to ensure variety. Our smoked salmon and poached egg starter and potato and rosemary soup were delectable, as was the scampi and famous Chequers burger with tomato compote and chips, which we enjoyed before plunging into chocolate brownie heaven – a superb finale. The extensive wine list and selection of seasonal draught ales and beers are also sure to keep you occupied as you nibble on chicken wings or perhaps a warm nacho and Gruyère cheese sharer.
