Kuti’s Brasserie is conveniently situated in the heart of Southampton’s fashionable eating district, Oxford Street. Ushered inside by their resident greeter, resplendent in traditional Sikh regalia, we knew we were in for a treat.


Kuti’s has two large, opulent dining rooms. Upstairs is reserved for the popular buffets and private parties, while downstairs lattice wall lights cast intricate shadows amidst the plush, elegant decor. Our visit coincided with their Tuesday night entertainment, when a magician tours the tables while renowned chef Romiz Miah and his team conjure up some magic of their own in the kitchen.


Over drinks and poppadoms, we chose from the menu’s wide selection of Indian and Bangladeshi dishes and inventive fusion food such as aloo Brie tikki (potato balls flavoured with ginger and cashew, filled with Brie and served with tamarind sauce). paneer cake stuffed with mushrooms) was light and spicy and the crab cakes were satisfyingly crisp with lovely touches of ginger. My main course of chicken xacuti, a Goan speciality, featured succulent pieces of chicken and a winning combination of whole, dry-roasted and tempered spices. Lal maans, a royal Rajasthan lamb dish, wowed us with its velvety paprika sauce. Basmati rice, Sylheti naan and zeera aloo – potato sautéed in cumin and coriander – proved perfect accompaniments.

The unusual black tiger prawns and tandoori quail are equally as tempting. Follow this with Rajasthani lamb leg curry – perfectly tender in a heady spiced sauce – or the delicate pan- fried sea bass accompanied by lemon rice. All dishes are visually stunning and take your tastebuds on an adventure you will never forget. The seasonal set menu offers wonderfully reasonable prices for the same high standard of cuisine.
