Location 1 Oxford Street, Southampton, SO14 3DJ t: 0844 683 6492 w:
www.rasrajindia.co.uk
As one of the only ethnic-cuisine-offering members of Hampshire Fare (an organisation that promotes locally sourced food), this Indian restaurant really stands out for all the right reasons. The chefs’ complete commitment to refined authenticity is evident within all the food offered here. The menu is bursting with dishes made using organic, local produce, with plenty of vegetarian choices and an extensive list of unusual options. Perhaps begin with some Indian street food in the shape of Bombay bhel – puffed rice with potatoes, deep, rich spices and homemade chutneys. To follow, dishes like water buffalo bhuna and Keralan monkfish in coconut sauce illustrate the diversity and expertise of the kitchen. All dishes can be catered to your individual palate, and the helpful staff are always happy to offer advice. For those who want a real taste of India with a fine-dining edge, Rasraj is the place to go.

Location 3-5 Romsey Road, Lyndhurst, SO43 7AA t: 0844 683 6493 w:

Situated just off Lyndhurst High Street, the glass frontage of Passage to India is as wide and as bright as the array of various culinary delights you will find on the extensive menu inside. An exciting choice of dishes varies from the ever-popular baltis and more refined kormas to an extensive list of chef’s recommendations and specials. To start I was tempted by the batak tikka – tender pieces of duck marinated in a tikka-spiced sauce and served with yoghurt – while my partner chose a more traditional onion bhaji. For our main courses we ordered a house special – chicken darzeeling – and a show-stealing chicken tikka masala which was without doubt one of the creamiest and most delicious I have ever tasted. Passage to India is the perfect air-conditioned venue, catering for business and private parties, and offers a 20-per-cent discount on takeaways.

After our evening at the acclaimed Curry Leaf, my partner decided that the curry here was some of the best he had ever experienced – I really couldn’t disagree. Tucked down a little side road, this proudly traditional Indian restaurant was previously known as Curry Garden and is now back to its former glory. Step inside to find a friendly environment, rich in traditional decor, and prepare yourself to be treated to outstanding service and generous helpings of exquisite cuisine. My partner enjoyed indulgently sweet chicken pasanda with coconut rice, while I tucked into a dansak brimming with succulent chicken. Both were simply divine – we could tell that only the freshest spices and meats were used. With a menu catering to both vegetarians and meat-lovers – alongside a selection of beers, wines and non-alcoholic drinks – the Curry Leaf offers an unmissable dining experience.
