The Hampshire-based Seasons Restaurant, on the edge of the New Forest, is located in an 18th-Century tithe barn (that can also be hired for private events) and sits snugly between two lakes and rolling countryside. A gorgeous dining experience amid beautiful surrounds awaits visitors to The Bird in Hand on Lovedean Lane. This restored Victorian pub boasts a truly rustic, cosy feel. Exposed timber and brickwork is complemented by prettily dressed windowsills and candlelit tables, and during winter guests are welcomed in from the cold to warm themselves beside a roaring log fire. Meanwhile, in summer this is the perfect place for a little light refreshment after a long stroll.

Dining here is an intimate affair, with soft chatter and music tinkling in the background. Real care and attention is paid to constructing a frequently changing menu, with unusual flavour combinations appearing throughout. Homemade bread with caramelised onion and herb butter really set the tone, which was continued with braised venison suet pudding with honey and Port jus and a serving of lamb kidneys with sautéed wild mushrooms. Beautifully presented mains of roast pheasant or trio of rabbit are a great choice for game- lovers, while the rarebit-crusted smoked haddock with mashed


potato, fried duck egg and creamed leeks is stunning both to the eye and the palate. Finish with something along the lines of the light lemon curd Pavlova – certainly worth making room for.
