This 18th-Century coaching inn is a captivating place situated in one of the most attractive parts of Winchester, amongst historic narrow streets. There are real log fires and a network of rooms full of interesting mementoes – a cosy place to relax after a day spent exploring the locale.

Open: Mon-Sun 11am-11pm Food Served: Mon-Sat noon- 3pm, 6pm-9.30pm; Sun noon- 3.30pm, 6pm-9.30pm

The tempting menu showcases the finest Hampshire produce, and the impressive wine list ensures finding your ideal tipple is a doddle. The scallops with curried cauliflower purée was a visually stunning starter, as was the salmon cured with orange and whisky, which was offset beautifully by sweet beetroot remoulade and rye breadcrumbs. My partner declared the 12-hour-braised feather blade of Hampshire beef main, served with smoked mash, to be beautifully tender. My unusual pairing of halibut and confit duck worked thanks to an orange reduction, which complemented both key ingredients. Triple-cooked chips, which arrived presented in a beer glass on slate strewn with salt, were steamed then fried twice and tasted amazing as a result.

For dessert, orange-infused fondant with cinnamon ice cream oozed melting chocolate, and, thanks to popping candy, offered a real explosion of flavours. I couldn’t resist stealing a bite of my partner’s smooth, refreshing passion fruit mousse with yoghurt sorbet and gingerbread.

The Wykeham Arms is deservedly popular. If you’re planning to eat here or stay in one of the en-suite bedrooms, book in advance to avoid missing out on one of Winchester’s highlights.
