The team here have put their heart and soul into The Jolly Sailor, and boy does it show. Their aim is to create a pub experience that delivers high quality at reasonable prices. The setting does a great deal to support this intention, as the dining area overlooks the peaceful River Hamble at Bursledon Marina.

‘...dining area overlooks the peaceful River Hamble...’

To start, my eggs Benedict were beautifully cooked, with creamy yolks bursting over the cured ham and muffin, combining wonderfully with the hollandaise sauce. To follow, the Moroccan chicken with vegetable couscous and sour cream was gorgeous – the leg and breast of chicken were so tender they literally fell of the bone, while the couscous, with courgette, onion and tomato, was fluffy and tasty. The dish was complemented by a rich sauce, offset by the freshness of the sour cream. For dessert there were no less than 12 choices, including three specials.

The atmosphere at The Jolly Sailor is quiet and sophisticated and the waiting staff certainly contribute to this feeling. They are attentive but not intrusive, and very willing to discuss the food, the river or anything else that comes up. I would go back just to resume our conversation; the fact that the food is superb is an added bonus.

The Ship Inn

 Location The Quay, Lymington, SO41 3AY t: 0844 683 1762 w: www.theshiplymington.co.uk

The charming Ship Inn overlooks the quay in the quaint Georgian town of Lymington. Cobbled streets and boutiques make this the ideal location for such a stylish village pub, which is a social hub with a pleasingly mixed clientele. With a contemporary nautical theme throughout, it manages to be both sophisticated and full of character and charm.

In the elegant restaurant you can choose from an inspiring yet reasonably priced menu featuring dishes made using local produce. I tucked into a starter of hot- smoked salmon rillette with creme fraiche and cucumber salad – truly delicious – leading me excitedly onto the main course. I chose the succulent slow-cooked pork belly glazed in maple syrup with a light jus, braised red cabbage, mashed potato and crisp homemade onion rings. Everything was cooked to perfection. As if I had not indulged enough, the apple, raisin and nut strudel with cinnamon cream was the perfect finale to a truly lovely meal. There is also a wide selection of wine, real ale and local brews to complement the fantastic food.
