Due to popular demand, Poppins has now opened an additional restaurant on Portswood Road, in order to serve even more lucky local folk. It’s larger than its sister restaurant in Eastleigh, yet equally warm and affable. With plans to visit the Portswood Road restaurant in the near future, we visited Poppins in the railway town of Eastleigh – the reasons behind its popularity were immediately apparent. Airs and graces are left at the door as personable staff provide exceptionally friendly service. While watching the hustle and bustle of the open kitchen, we perused a diverse menu, which features a variety of wholesome homemade dishes. Poppins is famous for its sumptuous cooked breakfasts, so I decided to traverse the breakfast route and sample one of their legendary omelettes, followed by a ‘Mary Poppins’ dessert. This turned out to be a decadent combination of pancakes, banoffee and ice cream, topped with a spoonful of sugar – naturally.

This feel-good diner offers unbeatable value and even has a rentable function

room. Customer feedback is highly valued, so make a suggestion for the future and you just might find it on the menu by your next visit. Just like Hollywood’s enchanted English nanny, this restaurant has a touch of magic. Whether for a hot drink, quick snack or main meal, Poppins is the perfect place for poppin’ in.

 Location 20a Winchester Street, Basingstoke, RG21 7DZ t: 0844 683 1729  Location 94 Canalside, Gunwharf Quays, Portsmouth, PO1 3FA t: 0844 683 1728 w: www.caferouge.co.uk

Chic, Parisian-style Café Rouge offers diners a little slice of Gallic life. The Basingstoke Café Rouge can be found near to the Haymarket Theatre, so is great for a pre or post-show meal, while the restaurant in Portsmouth offers Continental dining by the sea. Take a seat on the large alfresco seating area and relax with the papers over breakfast – tuck into Continental pastries or a French favourite of smoked ham and Gruyère cheese croque, topped with a fried egg. The breakfast menu is complemented by a selection of fresh juices and fine French coffees.

Open: Mon-Sat 9am-11pm; Sun 9am-10.30pm

If dining at lunchtime or in the evening, experience the delights of the core menu, which features everything from the lightest of snacks to hearty rustic French staples. If you’re on the move, plats rapides are the ideal choice, with a range of dishes from just £7.95. The great-value prix-fixe lunch menu is available from noon until 5pm every day, at £6.50 for one course or £8.50 for two. If opting

for a three-course French feast, start with classic moules marinières, continue with boeuf Bourguignon and finish with a tangy tarte au citron. Of course there are also sandwiches, salads, nibbles and moules aplenty. To complement all of this fine food, the staggering range of quality wine listed at Café Rouge is an oenophile’s dream. Café Rouge really is bringing a little of ‘la belle vie française’ to your corner of the UK.
