Half Moon & Spread Eagle

 Location Winchester Road, Micheldever, SO21 3DG t: 0844 683 6619 w: www.halfmoonandspreadeagle.com e: admin@halfmoonandspreadeagle.com

Half Moon & Spread Eagle has been given a fresh lease of life by new landlords Jon and Millie. Together they have put on events like an international mussel weekend and a summer ale festival to add excitement to a charmingly rustic venue boasting an extensive beer garden. The menu aims to please all diners by mixing pub classics alongside intriguing Continental fare, all devised by talented head chef Chris. Starters of haddock and prawn fishcakes and black pudding with sweet potato and fennel were beautifully cooked. The cassoulet main, featuring tender chunks of ham, certainly impressed, as did the organic pork faggots with a side of colcannon. This was topped off with a chocolate and amaretto pot with honeycomb ice cream for dessert. Real ale fans will be pleased to hear that a Half Moon ale is in the pipeline.

Delightfully decorated in the style of a traditional country pub, complete with overnight accommodation and a beer garden for alfresco dining, The Jack Russell Inn is a charming establishment in the heart of rural Hampshire. The home-cooked roast partridge special was absolutely delicious, augmenting the traditional menu along with dishes such as mixed game casserole, hearty pies and a number of vegetarian options.

With a fire crackling in the grate and soothing music playing quietly in the background, we felt supremely comfortable relaxing in the bar and conservatory, while the friendly welcome and warm smiles we received from the staff – ever-helpful throughout our evening – really helped make our visit special. A memorable evening in a truly memorable hostelry.
