Location 198 Lyndhurst Road, Ashurst, SO40 7AR t: 0844 683 6631
Nestled within the New Forest village of Ashurst, near Southampton, is the popular Happy Cheese pub. The Happy Cheese is the only pub of its name in the world and the atmosphere is as unique and friendly as the pub’s title, with a warm, traditional feel.
Open: Mon-Sat 11am- 11.30pm; Sun noon-10.30pm Food Served: Mon-Sat noon- 9pm; Sun noon-8pm
The menu combines traditional pub classics with more unique dishes such as spicy chicken fajitas and Hawaiian burgers. The specials board offers an extensive selection – we certainly weren’t going to pass up the opportunity to sample one of the tempting dishes featured. The olive platter was a tasty treat, combining salty black and green olives with juicy sundried tomatoes and fresh homemade lemon- zest hummus. The homemade soups were equally delicious – my partner enjoyed carrot soup that was full in flavour and beautifully thick in texture. For mains, the sirloin steak was lean and perfectly cooked to taste by the chef. It arrived with all the trimmings in a more than generous portion, providing great value for money. The vegetable fajitas had a spicy tang, cooled by the dressings to give an elegant blend of flavours.
The dessert menu is equally full, with a range of classics and ice creams that are sure to suit every taste. If you are looking for value-for-money pub grub in a great location then look no further – you will certainly leave happy.

‘
...gastro-style menu features more than your typical pub grub...’
Open: Mon-Sat 10am-11pm; Sun 11am-11pm
The Still & West’s gastro-style menu features more than your typical pub grub. It caters for a wide variety of tastes and the food is prepared fresh daily and sourced locally. The selection changes throughout the year depending on the availability of seasonal ingredients, so even regular diners will find something new and exciting to try. On the evening we visited, the menu included a generous serving of perfectly cooked steak and deliciously fresh sea
bass served with Mediterranean couscous. If you have room for dessert, there is an exquisite sticky toffee pudding available or, for chocolate-lovers, chocolate brownies that come served with quality ice cream.
Being a Fuller’s pub, there are plenty of beers and ales to choose from and, of course, all your favourite wines and spirits. The Still & West is the perfect location to enjoy your favourite tipple while indulging in fantastic cuisine and a wonderful atmosphere – a must for food fans and those simply looking for a good time.
