Since being taken over by Mandy and Paul three years ago, this 15th-Century public house has undergone an impressive restoration whilst retaining many of its traditional features. All food at The Dolphin is homemade. If you fancy a light lunch, choose from a brilliant selection of hot and cold sandwiches, jacket potatoes and salads. Alternatively, if you’re after a wholesome meal, sample a starter of beer-battered mushrooms before moving onto a moreish main like lamb and mint pudding or Tuscan sausages, all served with a choice of potatoes and vegetables or salad. If you have room for dessert then indulge in a homemade sweet treat. Moreover, you don’t have to leave the kids at home; there are dishes on the menu specifically for children and an outside play area in the garden. This family-friendly inn exudes charm and offers a vast selection of good home-cooked pub fare and cask ales – well worth a visit.

In its quaint location on Chapel Lane, The Plough blends a traditional country pub atmosphere with comfortable dining to great effect. An ever-changing menu accommodates a variety of homemade delights, including the haddock and crab cakes we enjoyed as a starter along with a bowl of steaming hot, fresh carrot and coriander soup of the day. The British beef and beer casserole, with tender chunks of beef marinated in a hearty beer broth, satisfied my carnivorous tastes, while the creamy spinach and ricotta cannelloni was a scrumptious vegetarian option. Well-measured portions offered plenty without being overpowering and the dessert menu was full of pub classics, along with more unusual dishes such as the zesty chocolate orange ‘meltdown’. Ample room for children to work up an appetite in the play area and beer garden, and a dog-friendly policy, makes this an ideal place to while away an afternoon.

With a roaring fire, great selection of hearty local ales and strong bill of fare, The Bat and Ball Inn oozes a traditional British pub ambience. Expect a classic menu with a twist – this venue blends pub favourites with unusual South African cuisine. The specials board, which is packed with tasty treats such as ostrich steak, is also popular.


Generous starters of watercress soup and tiger prawns in garlic butter were mouth-watering, and our mains of spicy Moroccan lamb casserole with apricots and couscous and mushroom and Brie Wellington were equally scrumptious. The dessert board provided ample choice; I couldn’t resist the tangy, sweet lemon meringue pie. The Bat and Ball Inn is certain to impress and your first visit will definitely not be your last.
