£20 The Bear & Ragged Staff

 Location Stoneymarsh, Michelmersh, Nr. Romsey, SO51 0LB t: 0844 683 1756 w: www.thebearandraggedstaff.net

After its beautiful refurbishment in 2010, The Bear & Ragged Staff was honoured with the 2011 Hampshire Hospitality Award’s ‘Superior Quality Assured’ and ‘Local Produce’ awards, and it’s easy to see why. Visitors can choose from traditional, modern, Continental or English dishes, alongside tasty bar snacks and daily changing specials, accompanied by a frothy cappuccino, glass of fine wine, or a pint of real ale. The menu changes seasonally and all food is cooked on the premises, with local produce used wherever possible. A bar menu with a difference offers traditional sandwiches, topped ciabatta breads, popular ploughman’s and dishes for sharing with friends. Tempting homemade puddings are also available. The Bear & Ragged Staff is a haven that the locals are to be envied for – pay a visit to this 16th-Century pub in the heart of the Test Valley and judge for yourself.

£20 The Fish Inn

 Location The Bridges, Ringwood, BH24 2AA t: 0844 683 1769 w: www.thefishinn.net

Newly refurbished in 2011, The Fish Inn is at the top of my list when it comes to quality, quantity and all the trappings of a traditional English tavern. The huge variety on offer will leave you pondering your choice for quite some time, providing the perfect excuse for sitting back and indulging in a pint of thirst- quenching ale. You can choose from the daily selection, à la carte or bar menu. Taking advantage of local produce at every opportunity, the dishes here are flavourful and hearty, and always prepared on the premises.

Call in to fill up on the excellent food, to sample one of the four ales or a glass of wine from the 15-strong list, or to settle down with a warming hot chocolate. Whatever you fancy, this thatched pub on the banks of the River Avon ticks all the right boxes.

£15 to

£25 The Rock

 Location Canada Road, West Wellow, Nr. Romsey, SO51 6DE t: 0844 683 6591 w: www.therockarms.co.uk e: enquiries@therockarms.co.uk

Located on gorgeous Canada Common it may be, but be sure to expect a traditionally British affair here at The Rock. This top-notch country pub provides the perfect retreat and really stands out from the crowd due to the quality of the dining experience on offer and the extensive range of beers and wines.

We were impressed with its newly refurbished, contemporary interior, inspiring bill of fare, and regularly changing specials board that featured a wealth of choice. We prudently plumped for flavoursome baby octopus and spicy chorizo with prawns to start. Later, perfectly cooked calf’s liver on a bed of sage mash made for a tasty main, as did the comforting seafood pie, simply served on a wooden platter. A velvety Baileys creme brulée completed our evening beautifully.
