I’d heard La Baronia was the genuine article time after time, long before I had the chance to put the rumours to the test first-hand. I have to say, if you like your food completely homemade and quintessentially Mexican, right down to tangy traditional sauces and creamy dips, you’re sure to join the La Baronia fan club. Although Tex-Mex favourites such as burritos and nachos are available, it pays to be adventurous here. The intriguingly titled cactus salad was deliciously spicy, the crispy duck flautas were flavoursome and the home-smoked barbacoa chicken was an utter delight. To follow, we shared the best slow-roast pork we’d ever tasted, grilled in a chilli adobo until absolutely tender. Rice, salad and refried beans made for a lovely accompaniment. 95 per cent of the menu is gluten free and, as an added attraction, La Baronia hosts some superb Latin-American live music nights.
