info@littlemere.com
You’ll find Little Mere Restaurant in a gorgeous thatched cottage thought to be around 300 years old. Its beautiful New Forest location renders it popular with families, walkers and cyclists exploring the woodlands, particularly with two en- suite guest rooms providing a handy, comfortable place to crash after a day’s hiking and a nourishing meal. Step inside and you’ll be surrounded by stylish, contemporary decor showcasing original log-burning stoves, wooden beams and rustic brickwork. There’s also a large conservatory overlooking floral gardens – the perfect place to relax with a pre-dinner drink.
Open: Thurs-Sat 7pm-11pm; Sun noon-4pm
A weekly changing Sunday lunch and monthly à la carte menu provide a platform for a range of culinary techniques. Passionate head chef Simon Reed and sous chef Sally Ann Ransome have a great understanding of what constitutes great cuisine and know how to execute the ultimate dining experience. Stunning starters include beetroot tarte tatin with orange and fennel salad – great with homemade bread. Dishes like grilled turbot with
saffron and leek sauce will make a great main, while iced cranberry and tangerine parfait with chestnut praline would be the ideal conclusion. Or visit between April and October to indulge in a traditional cream tea.
Vegetarians are always catered for and (with a little notice) the team can whip up something extra special for those with dietary requirements. Pre-booking is advisable and the dress code is smart-casual, so make sure you’ve got your glad-rags on.

Location Ashley Lane, High Street, Lymington, SO41 3RH t: 0844 683 1712 w:
www.lanesoflymington.com e:
info@lanesoflymington.com
It is rare to find a restaurant that stands out as being excellent in every way, but down a quiet alleyway, just off the high street, lies just such a restaurant – the Lanes of Lymington is a dining experience you shouldn’t miss.
This former church and school building retains many of its original features and the decor is exquisite, with bright paintings of the town adorning the walls. Not only is the interior exceptional but the food is too. Chef Peter Leyland-Jones takes great care to ensure each dish, prepared with local, seasonal produce, tastes just as beautiful as it looks. The stuffed noisette and cutlet of lamb was outstanding, and the baked halibut steak was just one of the many delicious seafood dishes on the menu.
Open: Tues-Sat noon-2.30pm, 6.30pm-9.30pm
Peter’s wife Nicola is a natural hostess and makes everyone feel at ease. Service is swift, intuitive and seemingly effortless, but never hurried. Prices are affordable too, with a two-course lunch costing £13.95 and evening mains priced at around £17.50.
Despite its high calibre of service and exquisite cuisine, Lanes remains proudly unpretentious, with emphasis on comfort before prestige. Whether having a glass of wine at the bar or sitting down to a meal, you will feel completely relaxed at this intimate yet convivial establishment. It’s worth finding an excuse – any excuse – to discover this haven of hospitality.
