The Italian Bar & Grill

 Location 30 Great Southsea Street, Southsea, Portsmouth, PO5 3BY t: 0844 683 6679 w: www.theitalianbarandgrill.com

This spacious, contemporary Italian American eatery combines its two favourite nationalities – offering the sophisticated flavours of the former and the no- nonsense approach of the latter. Classics such as pizza, pasta, steak and ribs are all in attendance on the menu and given intriguing twists thanks to well-considered culinary methods, beautiful presentation and innovative use of herbs from the prized garden. My garlic mushroom crostini, which arrived in a gorgeous garlic butter and truffle sauce, comes highly recommended. Grilled over hot coals, my main of juicy rib-eye steak in a flavoursome garlic and rosemary marinade was absolutely stunning. My partner’s folded calzone Santa Fe pizza, filled with spicy chicken, pepperoni and melted cheese, really delivered, and a lemon and blueberry cheesecake provided a delectable end to our evening.

Food Served: Mon-Thurs 5pm-10pm; Fri & Sat noon-10.30pm; Sun noon-9.30pm Pulcinella

 Location 16 Carlton Place, Southampton, SO15 2DY t: 0844 683 1837 w: www.pulcinellasouthampton.co.uk e: mo@pulcinellasouthampton.co.uk

Pulcinella is a word meaning Neapolitan mask in Italian, although owner Mo ensures that no aspect of this brilliant Italian remains hidden. The interior is decidedly modern while a rustic touch is evident throughout. All produce is delivered daily, ensuring the finest dishes are created – all deliciously fresh. The pizza and pasta menus feature a host of Italian classics, as well as the option to create your own pizza from a comprehensive choice of toppings. The ever-changing specialities menu includes a range of Pulcinella’s own unique dishes, all of which are exciting and enticing. Such dishes include the belly of pork and crackling, stuffed with rosemary and garlic, resting on a bed of wholegrain mustard mash. Candlelit tables make it perfect for either a romantic meal for two or a large party. An outside courtyard area is also available – a fabulous place to enjoy some alfresco dining in the warmer summer months.

Open: Mon-Fri noon-11pm; Sat noon-1am Mama Mia

 Location London Road, Hartley Wintney, RG27 8RT t: 0844 683 6681 w: www.mamamiarestaurant.co.uk e: info@mamamiarestaurant.co.uk

When it comes to authentic Italian dining, Mama Mia sets the bar high. This sophisticated restaurant, exuding an air of romance and style, offers an excellent level of service and is friendly, welcoming and highly professional. Delectable specials include tasty white crabmeat risotto and tender venison with wild mushrooms. Plenty of top-notch, freshly made pizzas and pasta dishes are also readily available. On hearing several other customers order the steak, I followed suit and discovered my own personal star of the show. Comprising succulent, melt-in-the-mouth beef from the local area, this popular dish was cooked to absolute perfection. While dining at this family-run restaurant, I felt as if I had been transported to sunny Italy thanks to its relaxed feel. Mama Mia offers elegant surroundings, generous portions and faultless hospitality – I’ve already made plans to return.
