With its thoroughly warm and intimate feel, you can’t help but be bowled over by the welcome at The Fox Inn in Tangley. A retreat for local families, walkers, cyclists and visitors alike, this traditional-looking inn offers a deliciously varied menu mainly based around Thai cuisine.
Savour Thai fishcakes with sweet chilli sauce or the beef satay – both were delicious when we sampled them during our visit. Perhaps follow up with a yellow Kaeng Lao curry with green beans, potatoes, coconut milk and coconut rice accompanied by a glass of something from the extensive wine list. There’s also a selection of British favourites on offer, so for dessert you could go traditional with a superb sticky toffee pudding. Due to its popularity, it’s wise to pre-book at The Fox to avoid disappointment.

You wouldn’t automatically associate tapas with Thai food, but this innovative concept works extremely well. Furnished simply with wooden floors and tables and Asian-influenced artwork, Mango exudes understated charm and was packed even on our mid-week visit. We shared a couple of tapas as starters. A wide assortment of vegetable tempura included peppers, aubergines and sugarsnap peas coated in light batter, served with sweet chilli dipping sauce, while crispy squid was deep fried with coriander and pepper in a wonderful spicy coating. The portions were satisfyingly large and everything was incredibly moreish. Our mains included pad Thai, with soft melting noodles, tiger king prawns, bean sprouts and crunchy vegetables, and a succulent Panang beef curry with coconut rice. The delightful serving staff are English, but the food tasted so authentic that it was no surprise to discover the kitchen team are all Thai. This is a true taste of South East Asia in Southampton.
