Situated in the village of Stroud, near Petersfield, the Seven Stars affords wonderful views of the South Downs from its large terrace area and garden. Those driving to the pub will appreciate the huge car park and parents will value the enclosed outdoor children’s play area. The spacious interior has a relaxed, airy feel with stripped wooden floors, large fireplaces and candlelit tables. Part of the Hall & Woodhouse group, the Seven Stars serves the award-winning ales created by this Dorset family brewery – they even feature in some dishes, notably the steak and Tanglefoot pie, a perennial favourite. Other West Country gems offered include Frobishers fruit juices (try the intriguingly named Bumbleberry juice) and Purbeck ice creams.
The extensive menu, supplemented by imaginative daily specials, incorporates several inspired vegetarian options. A starter of fried blanchbait proved deliciously crisp and fresh, while field mushroom and mature Cheddar rarebit, heaped with rocket, looked and tasted divine. A main of tuna steak was wonderfully succulent and arrived with new potatoes, onion marmalade and a colourful assortment of spicy grilled vegetables. Barbecued chicken breast topped with cheese and accompanied by chips and salad was satisfyingly gooey and tangy. You have to try their legendary mini puds – a highly affordable, totally guilt-free indulgence, served in shot glasses. This pub is fittingly named – it deserves every one of its seven stars.

The first thing you notice when you walk into The Wyvern is the lively, friendly atmosphere. Locals perched at the bar joke with the bar staff and all around is the sound of happy chatter. Next, you might notice the great range of treats available on the specials board, including some more adventurous dishes, such as wild boar. On perusing the menu you’ll find a similarly wide selection, including a variety of burgers and pub favourites such as fish and chips. Chef and landlord Hugo loves to use local ingredients and takes pleasure in providing his guests with fare they might well have never tried before.
A good-sized portion of French onion soup was delightfully earthy, with sweet, soft onions complemented by a melted cheese crouton and fresh bread and butter, while the crispy fishcakes were served with a homemade sweet chilli sauce and plenty of rocket, setting us up nicely for our mains. Sizzling theatrically on a hot skillet, my lamb and pork arrived – both were wonderfully tender and supplemented with pak choi, bamboo shoots and chilli. Large chunks of chicken and winter vegetables in tasty gravy made up the chicken casserole from the specials board. Served with plenty of crusty bread, this dish was hearty, filling and utterly delicious. If you’ve room for more, why not try the apple crumble, chocolate brownies or one of nine New Forest ice creams? Delicious.
