The two dining rooms are accompanied by a lounge with an open fire, leather sofas and chandeliers – it looks almost as good as the food tastes. The main menu is available all week, with specials at the weekend. Begin with an enchanting platter of gypsy eggs with chorizo and caramelised onions followed by hearty roast duck with onion, orange and ginger jam. Real ales and an extensive wine list complement the food, and on Sundays guests can enjoy a delicious roast. Snacks are available, as are homemade cream teas and set lunch and weekday early dinner menus. The Hurdles also caters for occasions and events. If you’re looking for a pub with rural charm, look no further – the traditional Red House is just the place. Ideally situated just outside Basingstoke, it’s easily accessible and a great place to meet with friends from all parts of the country. Dating back to the 1500s, the bar features an inglenook fireplace, original stone floors and heaps of character. Relax with a drink and a light bite or sample substantial pub favourites. An à la carte menu is available in the restaurant, where you’ll be looked after by the friendly team. Perhaps try the fresh smoked salmon gateau – layers of salmon and lemon-peppered cream cheese with gorgeous gravadlax dressing – before pan- fried local venison, or pumpkin tortellini. While children will love the play area and thatched play house, adults can relax in the garden and terrace. The Red House roast is a Sunday must and due to its immense popularity, bookings are essential.
