This warm, welcoming and relaxed inn can be found on a winding country lane near Basingstoke. Unusual features such as an original well in the bar area and cosy leather seats add real character. We chose a quiet corner from which we could see the menu written on chalkboards hanging above the fireplace. The waiting staff kindly explained the selection of dishes, pointing out local and seasonal produce.

The Gamekeepers strongly supports local suppliers, including Hampshire Cheeses, producers of the award-winning Tunworth cheese – a delicious strong, soft cheese that is served here baked with honey and thyme alongside plenty of bread. I went on to sample the chargrilled fillet of beef with Dauphinoise potatoes, blue cheese and pink peppercorn butter, wilted baby spinach and a red wine jus. The exceptional beef was so tender it melted in the mouth, as was the roast partridge, cooked in butter and thyme and served with fondant
potatoes, creamed Savoy cabbage and bacon. Our meals were cooked to perfection, making this a thoroughly enjoyable experience.
The Gamekeepers is a wonderful place to spend the evening; I felt entirely relaxed thanks to both the setting and, of course, the good wine. The owners have created more than just a country inn – this is a first-class restaurant in its own right.

Once home to a Guernsey dairy herd, this is a quintessentially rural spot offering top-quality produce, including first-class cuts of Hereford beef from Stratfield Saye Park, lamb, poultry, game and handmade sausages. There’s also a superb selection of dairy and some unique and exclusive products to be had, such as the coveted olive oil from the Wellington Spanish estate and honey from the family’s Hampshire hives. Founded by Lady Honor Montagu, granddaughter of the eighth Duke of Wellington, Wellington Farm Shop was officially opened by HRH The Duchess of Cornwall in the summer of 2005, in support of sustainable farming practices.

The farm shop kitchen and café is great for a leisurely meet with a mate and offers a fine selection of savoury treats for those looking for a light lunch, including salads, quiches, pies and freshly made sandwiches, all showcasing produce from the farm shop. Your steaming-hot morning coffee comes courtesy of Giles Dick- Read in Dorset and makes for the
ideal wake-up call. Visit in the afternoon and you’re sure to be tempted by the gorgeous selection of homemade cakes and bakes. Conveniently located near the M4 and M3, Wellington Farm Shop is a charming choice for all the family.
