With husband-and-wife team Andrés and Marie-Lou at the helm of this very respectable establishment, you’ll be well looked after. Brought up in Spain on wholesome home cooking, Andrés has worked in some of London’s best restaurants, while Marie-Lou knows all there is to know about wine – her passion and expertise is clearly reflected in the extensive wine selection. Both have honed the art of hospitality and gladly welcome familiar faces and newcomers alike. Their seasonally inspired menu changes daily, but you might find yourself sampling something like ballotine of quail with foie gras, Madeira jelly and spiced salt. Delicious roast rib of Longhorn beef with creamed potatoes and curly kale followed by sticky toffee soufflé is sure to satisfy, although you could always take something home from the Purefoy Chocolate Room, which produces some of the finest truffles in Hampshire.

Modern meets traditional at this delightful inn and restaurant set amongst stunning Hampshire countryside. The recently restored Hawk Inn, complete with spacious interior, contemporary decor and a lovely, sunny aspect for alfresco dining, offers the best of traditional cooking. On arrival, you’re more than welcome to relax with a drink on the sofas, although it won’t be long before the menu draws you in. Try delicious devilled kidneys or beautifully seasoned Maryland crab cakes with tarragon dressing, complemented by something from the comprehensive wine list, then perhaps roast pheasant or spicy chickpea, sweet potato and spinach cake with tahini and chilli mayonnaise. The lure of indulgent sticky pear and cinnamon pudding with butterscotch sauce and honeycomb ice cream is sure to prove too much – so give in and enjoy. A return visit is an absolute must; you can even make a weekend of it by staying in one of the inn’s contemporary guest rooms.

A short stroll from the beautiful Sir Harold Hillier Gardens, charming country pub the Dog & Crook ticks all the boxes. Locally sourced food and ales, traditional decor and a picturesque outdoor area combine to create the ideal place to relax. The menu is as proudly traditional as the pub itself, but also features worldly twists on favourite dishes. Expect starters such as melt-in-the-mouth mushrooms topped with bacon and Stilton, and hearty mains such as fresh, beer-battered haddock with chips, peas and tartare sauce. My chargrilled tuna steak main married perfectly with the sweet chilli and citrus sauce, which gave the delicate tuna a delightfully piquant edge. My partner said the ribs and steak were the best she’d ever tasted, declaring them to be succulent, moreish and packed full of deep, rich flavour. Although tempted by the treacle pudding, we sampled the Knickerbocker Glory, featuring layers of soft ice cream, yummy syrup and indulgent cream – a perfect rendition of a classic dessert.
