 Location Winchester Road, Chawton, Nr. Alton, GU34 1SB t: 0844 683 6596 w: www.thegreyfriar.co.uk e: hello@thegreyfriar.co.uk

Mrs Bennet saw the importance of ‘two full courses’ in Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice, and you can enjoy just such a fine feast at The Greyfriar, found across the road from the former home of this popular English novelist. This welcoming establishment is housed in a traditional 16th-Century coaching inn, just south of the A31 – ideally located for those seeking a quality pub in delightful Hampshire surroundings.

‘...a creative slant on traditional pub fare...’

Open: Mon-Sat noon-11pm; Sun noon-10.30pm Food Served: Mon-Sat noon-2.30pm, 6pm-9.30pm; Sun noon-7pm

A large, spacious bar and dining area provides plenty of room for all to enjoy a meal in comfort, yet still retains an intimate feel, with open fires and traditional wooden beams. Two tempting menus were available on the evening of our visit – the main menu and a range of autumn specials. We began with haggis filo parcels served with a Drambuie and cream sauce – a creative slant on traditional pub fare. Belly of pork was in order for our main dish and, just like the starter, was delicious both in taste and appearance. The service was attentive under the licensee, Trevor, who

manages an efficient, welcoming team. Warm, snug and contentedly full, we were not going to brave the cold in a hurry, but the pub garden would be lovely on a warm summer’s evening – the perfect excuse for a return visit.

 Location Bridge Road, Park Gate, Nr. Southampton, SO31 7GD t: 0844 683 6597 w: www.talismanparkgate.co.uk e: talisman.southampton@hall-woodhouse.co.uk

The Talisman has a relaxed and tranquil atmosphere, which lends itself to just about any occasion, from a family celebration to a romantic meal. Easily found on the A27 with plenty of parking, it is remarkably free from traffic noise inside, with comfortable, stylish furnishings and choice decoration. The table layout has been thoughtfully considered, meaning everyone feels as though they have their own private dining area.

Open: Sat-Thurs 11.30am- 11pm; Fri 11.30am-midnight Food Served: Mon-Thurs 11.30am-9.30pm; Fri 11.30am-9pm; Sat 11.30am- 9.30pm; Sun 11.30am-9pm

This upbeat pub and restaurant was busy during our visit, so booking in advance will ensure you get your favourite table. Despite the hubbub, service was extremely friendly and commendably swift. I began with robust chicken and celery soup, served with a hot buttered roll. Comforting and hearty, this dish was followed by a generous helping of classic beef lasagne with lashings of melted cheese. The subtle flavour of chilli in my partner’s roast salmon perfectly married with the delicate fish, and other delicious dishes of chicken and ham hock pie and homemade sticky barbecue ribs sounded equally tempting.

To follow, my partner tried two of the celebrated mini puds, which come in adorable cocktail glasses. The chocolate brownie sundae was divine, and the apple fool contrasted beautifully with the accompanying creme fraiche. For those with big appetites The Talisman also offers full-size sweets, including the tempting banoffee sundae, and there’s even a luxurious cheeseboard.
