Jekyll & Hyde, owned by family brewers Hall & Woodhouse, is a delightful old English pub full of charm and character. The lunch menu offers a variety of filled baguettes and jacket potatoes – ideal after a long walk around the surrounding countryside. The main menu consists of classic dishes, including farmhouse-inspired larder boards featuring quality, locally sourced meat, fish and vegetables. Desserts are traditional gems such as steamed jam sponge, chocolate brownie and sticky toffee pudding. They also offer a selection of the legendary mini puds – a great alternative if you can’t quite manage the full portion.

My fellow diner opted for hearty homemade broccoli and stilton soup, while I sampled the chicken bruschetta topped with a creamy curry sauce – both accomplished dishes, prepared with undeniably fresh produce. Mains of chilli-roast salmon, accompanied by baked potato wedges and piquant jalapeno coleslaw, and the ‘Sussex smokey’ – a moreish ensemble of smoked fish and spinach in cheese sauce, topped with a delicious savoury crumble – were just as delightful.
Jekyll & Hyde is a great place to visit if you’re looking for a comforting, traditional pub experience. The food is wholesome and hearty, the service friendly and attentive, and there is also a large garden for summer alfresco dining.

It is well worth venturing off the A31 to track down this pub in rural Blacknest. With oodles of character and heritage, enhanced by cosy touches like a roaring log fire, beautiful brickwork and wooden flooring, The Jolly Farmer is an utterly charming choice for a lunchtime bite or leisurely supper.
The Jolly Farmer’s accomplished chef presents a great selection of freshly prepared, home-cooked dishes, plus a tempting specials board which changes regularly. I decided on the interestingly named ‘pork bomb’ for mains, which consisted of pork and black pudding in a bomb-shaped pastry cover – a rich, satisfying treat. My partner chose the chicken dish from the specials board, and couldn’t stop singing its praises. A special mention must go to the dessert selection – the piping-hot traditional apple pie was the best rendition of this classic pudding I have ever tasted.
