At this charming village pub in the heart of Southwick drinking and dining take equal priority. Listed in CAMRA’s Good Beer Guide, The Golden Lion offers a superb selection of beverages, including perfectly kept beers. The cuisine, on the other hand, makes great use of local ingredients and is evidence of a team striving for excellence in the kitchen.

The interior is immaculately clean, with a pleasing mix of stripped wooden flooring, exposed beams, cosy nooks and comfortable seating – the most relaxed of settings for informal dining. I started with smoked haddock fishcakes – fluffy with a crunchy coating and set off very nicely by the accompanying aioli – while my partner opted for tender and flavoursome seared sirloin with blue cheese sauce and a caramelised crust, declaring it to be simply delicious. roulade had a gorgeous spinach and wild mushroom filling, and the Cornish sea bass was expertly cooked, with crispy skin covering a melt-in-the-mouth fillet. Attentive, friendly service really made our night and it was clear a lot of thought had gone into creating a memorable dining experience.
We finished with the five local cheeses we’d been advised to order earlier on – a deliciously indulgent end to a fantastic evening.

Dating back to 1096 and reputed to be the oldest pub in the New Forest, this low-ceilinged inn with original beams – once a pair of foresters’ cottages – oozes authentic Hampshire history. Ali and Nick, who arrived in September 2011, are now building an enviable reputation on high-quality food and service, which could well go down in history itself.

The moment we stepped over the threshold we were hit by a real sense of occasion. Next to an open log fire, we took in the delights of the specials board, all of which comprised locally sourced ingredients from long-term suppliers and were prepared on the premises. The smoked salmon and prawn terrine starter was smooth and delicate and as a main course the beef Wellington was ideal, served with homemade chicken liver paté and mushroom duxelle. For dessert, warm chocolate tart with clotted cream and banoffee pie were both scrumptious and stunningly presented. All around was the sound of fellow diners praising the fine fare set before them. Far from a one-trick pony, this restaurant also offers pub favourites, light bites and a takeaway pizza service too. The food and ambience at The Fleur de Lys is not to be missed – and with Ali and Nick at the helm, it is certainly going places.
