BARBIE’S FASHION HERITAGE
Global celebrations for the 50th anniversary of Barbie have seen the fash-
ion doll brand successfully re-establish its fashion heritage and iconic status.
Fresh from the ground-breaking partnership with concept fashion retailer
Comme des Garcon in Dover Street Market, which debuted the first ever
UK Barbie adult retail experience, Mattel has announced further fashion
developments for the coming year.
The pop up shop activity will be repeated with luxury retail destination
Brown Thomas in Dublin. In homage to the significance of the Barbie collec-
tion, the Brown Thomas windows will become a brand statement featuring
life-size Barbie mannequins and pink packaging. A full range of Barbie adult
merchandise will be available including the exclusive Jeremy Scott apparel
collection as well as accessories, jewellery,
giftware, publishing and confectionary. Bar-
bie Consumer Products has also secured
a presence within key high street fashion
retailers. A new range of Barbie T Shirts
will go on sale in Next with further gift de-
velopments planned for autumn. In addition, Barbie clothing will be the first
licensed merchandise to be available from fashion powerhouse Miss Selfridge.
Barbie will also partner with a leading directional fashion retailer in develop-
ing the first ever DTR program in the UK for the brand which will include
exclusive Barbie fashions and an accessories collection plus cosmetics and
toiletries.

tributes to Barbie,” says Richard Dickson, General Manager and Senior Vice
President, Barbie. “To see the brand coming to life in such a progressive way

SANRIO IN EUROPE
Sanrio report that they have signed an agreement with Zara in Spain for Hello
Kitty. Zara will retail Hello Kitty baby, kids and tween apparel through more
than 1200 stores around the world (excluding China).
With Hello Kitty celebrating its 35 anniversary, Baselworld 2009, the watch
and jewelry tradefair in Switzerland, hosted the unveiling of a Hello Kitty Jewel
Doll adorned with 2345 pieces of genuine gems and a one-carat diamond from
Swarovski. The exclusive doll, valued at $152,000 premiered alongside the
launch of an unlimited five-piece jewelry set created with colored cubic zirco-
nia to commemorate Hello Kitty’s anniversary. Mas and San Rio have signed a
deal for the Hello Kitty Show. MAS (Music, Arts & Show), was launched in 1995
and is the biggest school for performers and dancers in Europe.
