Welcome to the November edition of Personal Care Global, our final issue of the year. It was with great sadness

that, as we went to press, we learned of the passing of Silab founder Jean Paufique aged 93.

Jean founded Silab in 1984, aged 53, and his

hard work and vision saw a small company in an unassuming region of rural France flower to become one of the world’s leading manufacturers of cosmetic actives. It could easily have been very different for the firm based near Brive-la-Gaillarde. Silab (Société Industrielle Limousine

d’Applications Biologiques) — was initially created to produce cosmetic and pharmaceutical products from animal blood, cows in particular. When mad cow disease struck around the turn

of the 1980s/1990s, Jean saw that Silab was in grave danger and concentrated his team’s efforts to focus exclusively on plant-based raw materials. The rest is history. Our thoughts are with Jean’s family and the wider Silab family.STEP

COMMUNICATIONS This issue has three main topic focus areas:

trending technologies, testing and anti-ageing. The first includes an insightful piece by Hejab

Malik, co-founder of San Francisco AI outfit Potion. Her article - AI, beauty and the future of formulation - is a must-read for those grappling with what advanced computing means for the personal care industry. In her words, AI in beauty formulation is not just a passing fad. In the testing focus, Lucideon explains how it is harnessing machine learning for modeling the optimal use of sensory panels. This, in turn, can create a more accurate and robust product development process. Elsewhere, Dermaproof Asia of Thailand

contributes an excellent article on in vivo assessments of hair greying treatments. I particularly enjoyed the P.G. Wodehouse reference! Speaking of Thailand, we are exhibiting at

this month’s in-cosmetics Asia trade show in Bangkok. Come visit us at stand S100, where you can

pick up copies of our brand new Little Book of Natural Ingredients Volume 5. Enjoy the magazine.
