marketing materials and ingredient documentation to make their products more digitally ‘discoverable’ in such a search engine, the ability to identify the perfect ingredient based on a variety of criteria would become near instant. Not only that, but we expect that a powerful

AI system that’s equipped with chemistry knowledge and specific ingredient information, will enable identifying ingredient alternatives, substitutes, and replacements to become easier than ever before.

Analyzing benchmarks Analyzing a benchmark product’s formulation can be a time-consuming task, especially if you do not have the luxury of time at the start of a project. Traditionally, formulators spend considerable time breaking down ingredient lists to understand what gives a product its unique texture and efficacy and which materials support its claims. AI can be leveraged to significantly

streamline this process. For example, in a properly trained AI tool, a formulator could simply paste the INCI list of their benchmark product into the system, and allow it to automatically identify the key functions of each INCI, identify potential raw materials (including specialty blends), and provide predicted concentration ranges. Whether looking to create a comparable

product or develop something entirely new based on a proven formula structure—this automatic analysis assists in the research and discovery process by immediately arming formulators with the information needed to move forward with requesting ingredient

Innovative ingredient combinations One of the most exciting applications of AI in R&D is its ability to identify unexpected yet effective ingredient combinations for specific formulation goals. By analyzing vast datasets of ingredient properties and scientific literature, AI can suggest innovative pairings that human formulators might not consider (or, would be too time consuming to unearth manually). For instance, an AI system might propose

combining a marine extract typically used in hair care with a plant-derived antioxidant for a potent anti-ageing effect in skin care. These AI- driven suggestions can lead to breakthroughs in efficacy, stability, or sensory properties. As a further step, a properly trained AI system could optimize ingredient ratios for maximum synergy and effectiveness, taking into account factors like cost, sustainability, and regulatory compliance.
