AI, beauty and the future of formulation
Hejab Malik – Potion
In a state-of-the-art laboratory, a team of formulators huddles around a computer screen, analyzing the results of their latest moisturizer prototype. Yet this is not your typical product development process – artificial intelligence has just suggested a groundbreaking combination of ingredients that promises unparalleled efficacy. This is how we envision the future of beauty
R&D, where AI is not just a buzzword, but a powerful ally in revolutionizing how we create and perfect beauty formulations. Gone are the days when AI in beauty was
merely a futuristic concept. Today, sophisticated algorithms are starting to optimize formulas, predict stability, and fine-tune textures with unprecedented precision. This is not about replacing human expertise – it is about amplifying it, allowing formulators to push the boundaries of what is possible in cosmetic science. From product development and R&D to
regulatory compliance and testing, AI has vast potential to transform beauty from the inside out. In this article, we will dive deep into a few (of many) tangible ways AI is impacting beauty R&D, exploring its use cases for ingredient selection, formulation, and beyond.
AI-powered ingredient discovery and selection In the chemical ingredients industry, crucial
information often lies buried in numerous documents: supplier data sheets, research papers, regulatory files, historical records, and more. This wealth of knowledge is a well-known bottleneck in the formulation process due to the sheer volume of data that formulators need to manually process. As such, it happens to be a fantastic problem space for applying AI.
Unlocking trapped information with AI AI has the power to revolutionize information processing, transforming how we discover, analyze, and select ingredients for beauty formulations. AI can rapidly scan and interpret vast amounts of text from diverse sources (think TDSs, SDSs, regulatory dossiers, marketing brochures, etc.) and extract key information, identify patterns, and continuously update its knowledge base as new data becomes available. Once extracted, AI organizes this information
into structured, easily searchable databases. This allows formulators to quickly find specific ingredient properties, compare multiple ingredients, and access up-to-date information without having to manually sift through PDF documents. As a case study of how AI can empower
enable faster access to information, consider a new paradigm through which formulators could discover and interact with ingredient data. Equipped with an industry-specific AI-

powered search engine, formulators could make queries such as ‘I need to find a polar emulsifier’ or ‘What is a good silicone alternative to use in a blush balm’ and receive relevant, highly accurate ingredient matches—without going through the cumbersome and manual process of selecting multiple filters and cross-checking multiple documents.
