Cosmetics Europe hails ISO’s in vitro SPF test approval


Trade association Cosmetics Europe has hailed ISO (International Organization for Standardization) approval of its in vitro SPF test method as a major advancement in the field of sun protection. Cosmetics Europe’s Double Plate Method (DPM) (ISO 23675:2024) has been officially recognised as an ISO by its central secretariat. The DPM is an alternative to the currently used


in vivo method ISO 24444:2019. “Now that the DPM is a recognised ISO


standard method, manufacturers can test the efficacy of sun protection products with the DPM in Europe and other regions of the world,” said Cosmetics Europe. The DPM has several key attributes, such as not


requiring human volunteers to test SPF, which makes it the only fully in vitro SPF ISO Standard method. It also provides consequent reliable, repeatable


and reproducible results consistent with those obtained using the current in vivo international standard method.


With the DPM, the possibility of human error is


highly reduced because of the use of state-of-the- art instrumentation, including a robot to spread


Mibelle’s Fred Zülli


honoured by Swiss SCC Mibelle Biochemistry founder Fred Zülli has been presented with the prestigious Kurt J. Pfeiffer Award by the Swiss Society of Cosmetic Chemists (SCC). This accolade recognizes outstanding


contributions to the advancement of Swiss cosmetology and the Swiss SCC. The Kurt J. Pfeiffer Memorial Award is


granted every one or two years to individuals or organizations that have made exceptional contributions to the field. Zülli, a Personal Care Global editorial board


member, founded Mibelle Biochemistry in 1991 and has invented a large number of patent protected cosmetic actives. He studied chemical engineering at the


Technical Engineering School of Winterthur Switzerland and continued his studies at the ETH in Zurich to study molecular biology and biophysics. In his Ph.D. thesis at the ETH, he investigated the thermostability of bacterial enzymes. “We are incredibly proud of Fred Zülli’s


achievements and his commitment to innovation and excellence in cosmetology,” said a Mibelle Biochemistry spokeswoman. “Join us in celebrating this significant


milestone and the continuous efforts of our team at Mibelle Biochemistry to push the boundaries of scientific research and development”.

The current international standard method is based on testing the efficacy of a sun protection product on volunteers’ skin, which must not be tanned. This can be difficult to ensure in the summertime. The DMP uses polymer plates to test the sun protection product and therefore can be employed all year round. As a fully in vitro method, the DPM also


fulfils the vision laid out in the European Commission’s 2006 ‘’Recommendation


on the efficacy of sunscreen products and the claims made relating thereto”, which highlights that the degree of protection against UVB and UVA should be measured using standardised, reproducible testing methods, with preference given to in vitro testing methods. “The method’s key attributes and its


recognition as an international standard represents major scientific progress in sun protection,” said Cosmetics Europe. We will continue to work on developing


robust test methods to determine various sun protection measurements and raise awareness on the method’s benefits.”
