A hotel is a building constructed specifically to provide lodging to travellers and this specific location is known as the property.


Room for 4 persons with 4 beds and bath. Room for 4 persons with 4 beds and a shower.


Room and breakfast/Bed and breakfast (Te breakfast can either be an English or an Continental breakfast – it is up to the guest to establish what type of breakfast it is.)


Tis term is used to describe the full tariff for accommodation.


A small piece of paper with details of the guest placed into the room rack at the front desk. A book kept at the reception desk where guests enter their name on arrival. A card given to each guest on arrival to complete with details of name and address.


Some reservations are held for guests, provided that they arrive before a certain time (frequently 18:00). If they do not arrive, then the room can be sold to another guest.

Room inventory cards To indicate all the appliances and stock in the room. When the room is decorated or stocked, the inventory is opened and checked on a yearly basis.

Tour list


A list of guests that indicates who will be sharing a room and with whom. All the departments that are concerned with the accommodation of the hotel. A facility offered to guests for the storage of valuable property.


Service charge payable at the hotel to the porter or any person working in the accommodation type. Tis charge is never included in the rate.


Te accommodation price is quoted per person per room, with meals charged to the guest’s account as they are taken. Most hotels quote separate charges to the guest’s bill.


Single room with bath. Single room with shower.


Member of front office staff in charge of shiſts of employees. A mid-price period between high and low season. Room occupied by a single person. A guest who stays overnight.


Hotels oſten quote a special rate for functions, groups, tours, businessmen or certain organisations that use the hotel on a regular basis.


A shiſt where employees work two periods in a day with a rest break in the aſternoon. A guest who extends his stay beyond the original departure date. A list of stolen and invalid credit cards issued by the card company. A chart in the reservation office showing at a glance whether space is available. A room that can be converted from a sitting room to a bedroom.
