• Maintain accurate room statistics and room key inventories • Maintain guest account statements and complete proper financial settlements.
e) Cashier Accepting payment of guest’s bills and dealing with currency exchange are the major tasks of the cashier. Te safe deposit boxes for guests’ valuables, should individual safes not be available in the rooms, will also be located in the office. Other sales departments of the hotel will receive their floats and pay in their takings at the cashier’s office. Te head cashier may prepare the banking and carry out the paying-in to the bank, but in some units this will be done by a member of the accounts staff.
Night coverage between 11 pm and 8 am is done by a night auditor who will also post charges, balance the accounts and prepare management reports. Te float with which cashiers may start a shiſt will depend on the size of the hotel, number of cashiers and occupancy of the hotel and can be a large amount of money. It is essential that cashiers are familiar with handling large amounts of money and transactions. Honesty is the prime qualification for the job and the hotel will take out insurance to ensure they are covered against a dishonest act by one of the cashiers.
f) Porter Concierge is the French term for porter, but not every porter falls into this category. Some units separate the department into two, with an enquiry desk and luggage porters. Te head porter (concierge) is traditionally a person of high status in the hierarchy of the hotel, responsible for: • Guest keys • Enquiries • Mail
• Teatre tickets • Car hire • Baggage
• Other guest services.
Recently, many of these tasks have been removed and concessions rented to specialist ticket agencies and car hire companies. Some tourist hotels do not have a head porter at all, instead there is an enquiry desk and luggage handling is supervised from reception.
g) Valet Dry cleaning, pressing and guest laundry are handled by the valet, who reports to the head housekeeper. Tis job is now only found in the most expensive hotels, as many guests are more willing to wash small items of clothing in the bathroom and borrow an ironing board from the housekeeper should it not be available in the room.
