Tis shows the average income per room. Generally calculated on a daily and monthly basis.


Tours and group bookings that arrive on the same day as the previous one is leaving are called ‘back to back’. Tere is no gap in the accommodation taken, for the room is continuously occupied throughout the season.


Medium-sized hotels use a bed sheet to show who is in each room. Te receptionist on duty fills it in each evening. Some forms have three columns showing arrivals, guests in house and departures.


Tis is the simplest form of a room status system, showing who is occupying each room. It can also be used for reservations. Commonly found in smaller hotels.


A separate department of the front office where guests’ accounts are prepared. List of guests who have bad dept and do not pay their accounts.


A reservation for a group of people travelling together, either on tour or for a company function.


Used by some hotels. Usually a large loose-leaf ledger to which pages is added when necessary. A separate page is used for each day.


Te outstanding total of guests’ accounts that are taken into the next day’s business. A room adjacent to the pool area, separated from the hotel’s main building.


Call: wake-up call (the exact time the guest wishes to be called in the morning) Paper: the newspaper order for the guest EMT: early morning tea/coffee


Time by which a guaranteed reservation must be cancelled to avoid forfeiting a deposit or being charged on night’s rate.


A separate department in the front office that takes money from guests in payment of accounts and carries out foreign exchange transactions. It may also handle safe deposit of guests’ valuables.


Central booking office/Central reservations office – a reservation office that handles bookings for all the hotels in a group or marketing consortium.


A guest who stays at a hotel without a previous reservation. Tis term can also be applied to restaurant guests.


Registration of guests. Usually aſter 14:00. Departure of guests. Usually before 11:00.


Many hotels will accommodate children free of charge or at a nominal rate if they share the same room with their parents.


Commercially important person. A client who has influence over a large amount of business.


A system to control reservations – staff is instructed not to accept bookings over certain busy periods. Te chart will be ‘closed out’ for rooms of certain types on certain days.


A payment made to a travel agent for introducing business. Complimentary – a room provided free of charge.


Concierge (head porter) Senior porter who supervises other porters and doormen. Conference business


Confirmation


A group of delegates using a meeting room in the hotel but ideally making use of other facilities such as accommodation, food and beverage.


A letter to or from a guest confirming the details of a reservation.


Confirmation number A number provided by the hotel to the agency when making a reservation. Confirmation slip


Connecting room Consortium


Room with inter-leading doors permitting access between rooms.


A number of independently owned hotels who join together to gain the advantages of group ownership.


At receiving a request for accommodation, hotels use the confirmation slip to acknowledge the booking if there is time before the arrival of the guest.
