Exercise, Physical Activity
and Health BSc (Hons) Exercise, Physical Activity and Health
What’s it about?
In recent years there has been an increase in the number of facilities and venues that have been designed to promote exercise and health. This has led to a growing awareness that physical activity can help to improve physiological and psychological wellbeing.
The government has indicated that the promotion of physical activity is central to developing the health of the nation. In addition, exercise is now an accepted form of treatment for a diverse range of illnesses and medical conditions. An increasing emphasis on exercise and physical activity has led to a dramatic increase in the employment areas of exercise referral, physical activity and health promotion, personal training, cardiac rehabilitation, and sport development throughout the country.
What will I learn?
This programme has been designed to enable you to maximise your job prospects by integrating the academic areas of exercise physiology, exercise and health psychology, sociology and nutrition, to produce practical solutions to improve health through physical activity.
You will become familiar with the factors that can affect the decision to exercise and how exercise programmes can be structured and implemented to enable an overall improvement in health. The ultimate aim of the programme is to produce graduates who can work with a range of individuals in a variety of settings to improve both health and fitness.
There will be the opportunity to complete vocational qualifications to improve employment opportunities and gain entry onto the Register of Exercise Professionals (REPs).
Modules include: • Innovations in Physical Activity and Health
• Psychology of Exercise and Health • Exercise Physiology • Behaviour Change • Exercise Prescription and Implementation • Eating Behaviour and Dietary Intervention
How will I learn? Teaching is delivered through a variety of methods such as lectures, practical skill sessions, tutorials, case study approach, problem-based learning, distance learning, placements, laboratory classes and computer-based workshops, with the addition of individual study and project team working. You will be allocated a personal tutor to help ensure your personal and academic development.
Can I get work experience?
In the final year of the programme, you will decide to either undertake a dissertation or a nine-month Exercise Practitioner Placement. You have the opportunity to arrange your own placement, subject to placement coordinator approval. Past students have gained work experience in exercise referral, physical activity promotion, personal training, health promotion, cardiac rehabilitation, sports development and as teaching assistants.

There is no formal or organised overseas exchange within this programme. However, in past years, students have made arrangements to undertake some of their learning abroad. You can discuss your options with the programme leader, who reserves the right to make a decision.
“I wanted to pursue a career in the exercise industry and this degree seemed ideal. I believe that the opportunity to combine theory with practice certainly helped me to achieve my first job, even prior to graduation, as an Exercise Referral Worker (cardiac rehabilitation) in central Manchester. I am now working as a Principal Active Lifestyles Manager for Salford Community Leisure, leading a range of projects. Alongside my academic achievement, I also received full colours for my athletic contribution to sport while at University.”
Dawn Mitchell BSc (Hons) Exercise Physical Activity and Health
Where can I get a job?
Previous graduates have gained work in exercise referral, health and physical activity improvement, corporate and sports fitness, cardiac rehabilitation and personal training. Some students have also chosen to undertake a postgraduate teaching qualification to become primary and secondary teachers.
With the 2012 London Olympics occurring this year, there will be a drive to encourage people to become active. This will inevitably provide opportunities for specialists in exercise, physical activity and health.
To ensure practice within our programme meets legal requirements, you will be asked to give consent prior to taking part in any activities that may affect your health and safety status – for example, role play activities to practise clinical techniques.
Successful applications are also subject to satisfactory Criminal Record Bureau (CRB) clearance.
