Environment Environmental Studies Foundation Year
What’s it about?
The Environmental Studies Foundation Year brings you up to speed so that you can start a degree in a related subject.
This Foundation Year is ideal if you want to change to one of these areas but do not have the appropriate entry requirements needed for direct entry to an Honours degree. The programme is also attractive if you are returning to higher education or if you wish to change career direction.
What will I learn?
You will study modules which help increase your knowledge and understanding of the social and natural sciences necessary for understanding and analysing contemporary environmental issues. Additionally, study skills modules will develop your ability to take notes, structure essays and write reports. Your skills in numeracy, IT, communication and presentation will also be enhanced.
Modules include: • Environment and Society • Environmental Biology • Earth Studies • Environmental Issues • Personal and Academic Development • IT and Data Handling
How will I learn?
Teaching is delivered through a combination of lectures, practical classes and independent learning. Regular tutorials in small groups are designed to encourage discussion and lead to an understanding of the complexity of environmental issues. Meetings with your tutor will allow you to chart progress and plan and organise your work schedules.
“I chose the foundation year because it leads onto the course I wanted to do and has been great help in preparing me for next year. It is great as it has a good mix of skills that in my case needed refreshing - for example maths, essay writing and research, were all areas I had not used in a while.
This year has shown me where my skills are and where I will have to work a lot harder.
me rethink what I want to do as it leads onto other courses so I feel more options are still open.
I do
feel if I had gone straight into the degree it would have proved too much but this has been a gentle ease back into education for me and I feel ready to tackle the degree with added confidence.”
