Psychology BSc (Hons) Psychology and Counselling Studies


What’s it about?


This programme is designed to provide you with a thorough grounding in the theory and application of the joint disciplines of psychology and counselling. The emphasis is on innovation and learning through a variety of styles that have widespread use, while developing key skills and relevant practical experience. The counselling skills you gain will provide a basis for further study and training in counselling. Whilst your final year supervised research project will allow you to explore an area of psychology of your choice.


What will I learn?


You will learn about the principles of psychology, biopsychology and the psychology of social behaviour, as well as research methods. Within counselling you will be introduced to key theoretical concepts and start to develop your practical counselling skills. You will focus on the theoretical aspects of helping relationships and consider how this relationship can be used to benefit clients’ psychological health.


Modules include: • Applied Social Psychology • Biological Psychology • Cognitive Psychology • Lifespan Developmental Psychology • Personality and Intelligence • Intermediate Counselling Skills I and II


How will I learn?


This programme is delivered through lectures, seminars, tutorials, group work and practicals, and problem-based exercises.


Where can I get a job?


You will be equipped to work in a number of environments, such as health and social care, business and education. Successful graduates from Psychology and Counselling can apply to enrol onto the Postgraduate Diploma or Masters in Counselling and Psychotherapy Studies. You may also go on to continue your study at postgraduate level to become a chartered psychologist.


Professional accreditation


The British Psychological Society (BPS) accredits this programme – if you achieve a lower second class degree or above, Graduate Basis for Registration is awarded. This is the first step to becoming a chartered psychologist.
