Information Technology BSc (Hons) Business Information Technology
What’s it about?
This degree has been designed to develop your knowledge of IT systems and how to implement them in business from a managerial point of view. It is closely linked to the current needs of employers.
You don’t need to have studied Information Technology previously to succeed on this programme.
What will I learn?
This degree is about developing your skills and knowledge in the design and development of IT systems and understanding how to implement them.
The programme blends the study of business and management principles with the examination of current information technologies. You will be capable of manipulating these technologies to an advanced level while also understanding their relevance and role within modern business. We not only teach you the ‘hows’ of technology but also the ‘whys’, ‘whens’ and ‘whos’.
Modules include: • Organisations, Markets and Economy • People Management • Management Development Programme I • Emerging Technologies • Creating Emerging Technology • Data Management • Management Development Programme 2 • Principles of Marketing • Project Management • Accounting Principles • Dynamic Web Development • Rich Media
How will I learn? Teaching is delivered through a combination of lectures, practical sessions, tutorials and the University’s online virtual learning environment.
Can I get work experience?
We strongly encourage students to consider the paid, professional placement year after year 2. This is an assessed year of work experience with an external organisation that allows you the opportunity to apply the skills and knowledge acquired at university.
We have strong links with industry and many organisations are keen to collaborate with us through student placements each year. Recent placements have included positions at Microsoft, Oracle, Intel, GE Capital, Nationwide Bank and the NHS.
Placements are sandwiched between the second and final year of the degree. You will greatly benefit from this experience and some students gain full-time employment with their placement organisation after their degree. Returning placement students also perform particularly well in their final year.
Overseas work experience may be available as part of a professional placement year. You may also participate in Erasmus placements at a number of EU universities. Teaching is primarily in English and all EU exchanges are eligible to receive Erasmus grants.
“After graduating, I began a career with PA Consulting as a management consultant. I have worked within multidisciplinary teams on many assignments, the most recent one being for a large public sector client. My role involves project managing a workstream as part of a wider programme delivering improvements. The project has extremely high visibility and multiple stakeholders.”
