Business and What’s it about?


If you are looking for a Foundation degree that is practical, professional and links study to real life experience, then this programme is for you. You will work on activities that simulate real-world problems, performing assignments based on realistic scenarios or on experience gained in part- time work.


You will use knowledge gained on the programme to either solve a work-based problem or develop an entrepreneurial project. You can go on to the BSc (Hons) top-up programme to gain an Honours degree in just one year of extra study.


What will I learn?


In year 1 you will learn the skills needed by a modern business professional.


Year 1 modules: • Management Development Programme I • Quantitative and Statistical Methods • Organisation and Environment • Introduction to Human Resources and Marketing


• Finance • Language or Emerging Technologies


Year 2 will teach you to apply your skills in complex business situations and you will identify your own business-related project.


Year 2 modules: • Core Module (Finance, Marketing, Personnel or Business Computing, depending on selected stream)


• Principles of Marketing • Project Management • Work Based Project (double module worth 40 credits)


Choose two modules from: • Financial Planning and Control • Organisational Behaviour • European Business Environment • Language

How will I learn? You will learn through lectures, seminars and tutorials, as well as spending a significant amount of time in computer laboratories. The opportunity to apply your newly acquired knowledge at work provides still wider opportunities for learning.


Can I get work experience?


You may undertake relevant paid part-time employment (two days a week) as part of your study, gaining work experience in a business or finance-related environment. If you do so, you may base your work-related assignment on this experience. If you do not secure relevant part-time employment, you will undertake an entrepreneurial project such as a business start-up.


Where can I get a job?


As a graduate of the Foundation degree in Business Management you will be able to explore opportunities in a specialist field or look to higher level duties in a general business environment. You will have gained practical knowledge through your part- time work that could put you ahead of those with only academic knowledge.


You may also progress to a top-up programme to gain an Honours degree at the University of Salford or elsewhere.

Duration: Two years full-time


Average teaching contact time: 14-16 hours per week


Assessment: Through case studies, individual or group-based assignments, written reports and oral presentations. There may also be time-constrained assessments and the use of computer software during some assessments
