Performing Arts BA (Hons) Physical and Dance Theatre
What’s it about?
If you want to choreograph and perform, and are interested in the cross-fertilisation of dance, physical theatre and technology, then BA (Hons) Physical and Dance Theatre is the programme for you. The aim of the programme is to give you a wide and diverse range of skills to create innovative and experimental work. In doing so this provides you with a firm foundation in a range of both theoretical and practical areas of performance.
The overall structure of the programme is informed by the expectation that professionals in the field will show an understanding of, and ability in, choreography/directing, performance and research as practice. Thus all programme modules are core in order to facilitate understanding of the essential integration of theoretical, expressive and creative elements.
What will I learn?
Physical and Dance Theatre Discourse will involve theory and practice. Within these classes you will engage in the principles and practices of the following physical and dance theatre developments: • Non-Naturalistic Theatre and Ausdrucktanz Theatre – for example, Artaud, Brecht, Meyerhold, Laban and Wigman
• Physical Theatre and Tanz Theatre – for example, Grotowski and Jooss
• Physical/Dance Theatre – for example, Butoh and Suzuki, Bausch and Vandekeybus, and DV8
• Performance Technologies (live performance and screen dance) – for example, McGregor, Johannes Birringer and Alien Nation, Margaret Williams and Thierry De May
Areas of study include: • Choreography and Directing • Physical/Dance Theatre Discourse • Current Trends of Performance • Body and Performance
How will I learn? You will learn through technique, creative workshops and seminar classes, all the skills necessary to make physical/dance theatre works. This will be further enhanced with intensive workshops (choreography and performance-based) and classes that concentrate on your development as a creator. All classes interlock to give a well-rounded education resulting in performance projects which are both staff and student-directed.
Students are required to be increasingly responsible for their own learning as they progress, thus preparing them for the industry. An important part of learning in this programme is to make the most of opportunities for extra-curricular activities organised by the programme team. These currently include: apprenticeships in Youth Dance, opportunities to enter work into regional platforms, opportunities to work as assistant director/choreographer/ workshop leader with the programme team and performance opportunities.
Where can I get a job?
On completion you may go on to perform, choreograph and/or direct. You may also go on to be a freelance teacher/community dancer or workshop leader, or to further postgraduate education.
