Media BA (Hons) Television and Radio

What’s it about?

This successful degree programme, which has been running since 1990, was designed jointly with senior media figures and builds on the strong industry contacts we have made and continue to make. Through the changes taking place at MediaCityUK, you will enjoy exceptional opportunities to work with the very latest industry-specified equipment, studios and labs.

This programme provides you with the skills that modern media organisations are looking for. In particular, the programme will develop your skills as producers, directors and researchers. You will be able to develop additional craft skills such as camera, sound recording and editing to complement your production skills.

What will I learn?

This modular programme allows you to shape your study in a way that best suits your interests and talents.

In year 1, you will be trained in production and work in small groups to produce television and radio programmes. You will study the impact of the media institutions that surround us and how to critically appreciate different types of television and radio programmes.

In year 2 you will specialise in television or radio and produce a TV or radio programme. You will be able to study the practical skills related to media production and continue to study media theory focusing on cultural and social theories and analysis of new and emerging digital media cultures.

In year 3 you will continue to develop your production skills by producing an individual television or radio programme which aims to achieve broadcast standards. You will also produce a detailed radio or television programme proposal or a dissertation. Optional practical and theoretical modules will allow you to take to an advanced level the specialisms chosen in year 2.

Areas of study include: • Media, Texts and Audiences • Audio and Video Ideas Development • New Media and Digital Culture • Camera, Editing, Lighting, Sound • Production Management • Scriptwriting • Channel M Studio Production • Lifestyle TV

How will I learn? Teaching is delivered through a combination of lectures, seminars, workshops and supervisory tutorials.

Students will be well placed to take advantage of the opportunities presented by MediaCityUK.

Can I get work experience?

Because of our excellent connections with local and national media organisations and companies, there will be opportunities to gain work experience through placements either within the University or out in industry.

Where can I get a job?

Many of our graduates have gone on to work as researchers, presenters, production assistants, producers and production managers in radio and television. Others have gone into craft and technical areas, such as camera operating, editing and web-page design. With the move of several BBC departments and other media companies to MediaCityUK at Salford Quays, where part of the BA (Hons) Television and Radio will be taught, there will be plenty of opportunities for our media graduates to develop productive links with potential media employers. This programme would also be a good basis for work in related industries such as advertising or public relations.
