Acoustics, What’s it about?
Sound plays an immensely important role in our lives. It provides communication and entertainment but can also be the cause of stress and premature deafness. On this specialist acoustics programme, you will gain the knowledge and the skills to build a career in the acoustics field. As a graduate of this programme, you will be able to carry out consultancy, research, development and design in acoustics and related areas.
What will I learn?
Year 1 will introduce you to acoustics, audio systems and signals.
During year 2 you will learn about digital audio, environmental acoustics and transducer design. You will also develop skills in high-level programming.
Your final year covers aspects of speech technology, architectural acoustics, computer simulation of acoustic environments and sound reproduction. You will develop practical skills in these areas by undertaking project work.
Throughout the programme, you will take a range of key skills modules in electronics, computing and maths.

How will I learn? Teaching is delivered through a combination of lectures, tutorials and practical work. You will also be involved in a series of individual and group projects.
Can I get work experience? We will encourage you to take an industrial placement year, which can be spent in the UK or throughout Europe.
Our current students spend their placements in a range of companies engaged in acoustic consultancy, loudspeaker development, digital audio development, broadcasting and digital communications.
Where can I get a job?
Graduates are in demand and have an excellent employment record in well paid careers. Previous graduates have obtained employment with companies such as Philips (Holland), Bang & Olufsen (Denmark), Sandy Brown Associates and Hepworth Acoustics.
