What’s it about?
As life becomes ever more complicated, the scope of law and regulation expands. The public sector, businesses, charities, even friendly societies and clubs, find it impossible to operate without some knowledge of the law. So the demand for lawyers comes not just from the legal profession.
With legal training you will develop highly transferable skills of research and analysis, oral and written presentation, and clear, logical thought, which can be used far beyond the area of law. It is therefore not surprising that many women and men at the top of business, City firms, the Civil Service, politics and so on, started their careers as lawyers.
What will I learn?
During this programme you will gain a firm grounding in the core legal subjects required by the profession, considerable scope for specialisation and, more unusually, the development of legal and transferable skills.
Modules include: • English Legal Process • Contract Law • Criminal Law • Law in a Global Context • Public Law • Analytical and Research Skills • European Union Law • Land Law • Law of Tort • Communication Skills • Equity and Trusts
Optional modules can vary with demand and staff availability, subjects include: Commercial and Consumer Law; Company Law; Criminal Justice; Cyberlaw; Dissertation; Employment Law; Environmental Law; Evidence; Intellectual Property Law; Family Law; Human Rights Law; Media Law; Medical Law & Ethics; Securities Regulation and Sports Law.
How will I learn?
In the core legal subjects and optional modules, you will learn through a combination of lectures and smaller discussion groups or seminars. The ‘skills’ modules will also involve computer sessions and oral and written presentations. It should, however, be emphasised that the successful study of Law does require a considerable amount of independent reading of texts and materials.
Can I get work experience?
If you wish to enter the profession and become either a solicitor or a barrister, it is very important to gain some practical experience in a legal office during your time as a law student. The school has links with the profession in and around Manchester to help students gain this experience, mainly in the vacations. Solicitors, barristers and employed lawyers also come to the University during term time to give careers help and advice.
A limited number of paid one-year placements are also available enabling students to work as a paralegal with a firm of solicitors. The placement year takes place between year 2 and year 3. Where can I get a job?
Apart from the legal profession, lawyers are employed in all areas of business and administration. Salford’s long-established links to the local community throughout Manchester ensures that its law graduates are highly employable.
