Mechanical
What’s it about? These programmes aim to develop your professional knowledge as well as design and analytical skills. You will gain awareness of social, legal and environmental issues associated with being a senior engineer.
The MEng is a four-year programme and leads to full Chartered Engineer status.
The BEng leads to partial Chartered Engineer status but should you gain good grades at the end of year 1, you may go on to year 2 of the MEng.
What will I learn?
There is a strong management theme as mechanical engineers are required to interact with business as they research, design, assemble and determine how modern society operates.
The programme also has broad engineering themes as you study the elements of energy, transport, structures and communication which are the key components to engineering products.
Mechanical engineering is specifically concerned with development, installation, operation and maintenance of just about anything that has moveable parts. Later in the programme there will be an opportunity to undertake an individual project with supervision in an area that interests you most.
Modules include: • Engineering Thermodynamics • Structural Engineering • Engineering Materials • Industrial Management • Fluid Mechanics • Control Engineering • Quality and Risk Management • Mechanical Group Design
Engineering MEng (Hons) Mechanical Engineering BEng (Hons) Mechanical Engineering BEng (Hons) Mechanical Engineering with Foundation Year
How will I learn? Teaching is delivered through a series of lectures, tutorials and laboratory classes with individual study and project team working.
Can I get work experience?
An optional year may be spent on industrial placement in a range of manufacturing companies, typically involving aerospace industries, in the UK or in Denmark, France, Germany, Ireland, Netherlands, Spain and Sweden. Teaching is in English and all EU exchanges are supported by an Erasmus grant. Successful completion will lead to the award of a Diploma in Professional Studies.
Where can I get a job?
These programmes provide a fast-track entry to careers in a wide range of engineering industries. You may choose a career in product design, manufacturing or the operation and maintenance of complex plants, such as power stations.
Many opportunities exist in automotive, aerospace, petrochemical, transport and communications companies, as well as other areas such as the armed forces and information technology companies. Graduates may expect to reach senior management posts in engineering industries as their careers progress.
Professional accreditation
These programmes satisfy Engineering Council educational requirements. They are accredited by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers leading to Chartered Engineer status.
