Law LLB (Hons) Law with Spanish
What’s it about?
Law with Spanish allows you to gain a qualifying law degree. It also enables you to develop knowledge and understanding of the major principles and doctrines underpinning English and EU law in addition to a firm comprehension of the Spanish language. The law element provides a sound foundation in law and legal skills. The Spanish component of the course develops fluency and accuracy in the language and gives a strong understanding of the Spanish language, the Spanish and Latin American legal system, culture and society. It is an excellent degree for those who may wish to enhance their opportunity to deal with international cases, be posted in offices abroad or work in or with EU institutions.
What will I learn?
You will gain a firm grounding in the core legal subjects required by the legal profession, and continued development of your Spanish language skills. All Spanish language modules share the aim of getting you to function effectively in the four fundamental language skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing.
Modules include: • English Legal Process • Public Law • Contract Law • Analytical and Research Skills • Criminal Law • Land Law • Law of Tort • Communication Skills • Equity and Trusts • European Union Law • Spanish
Language modules are designed to help you develop high-level oral and written communication skills and language proficiency by developing practical language usage as well as knowledge of contemporary society.
Optional modules can vary with demand and staff availability. Law subjects include: Dissertation; Employment Law; Evidence; Human Rights Law; Intellectual Property Law; Medical Law and Ethics; Securities Regulation and Sports Law.
Between years 2 and 3 you will spend a two-semester long period (12 months) abroad giving you the opportunity to work and/or study in a Spanish-speaking country.
How will I learn?
In the core legal subjects you will learn through a combination of lectures and smaller discussion groups or seminars. The ‘skills’ modules will also involve computer sessions and oral and written presentations. The Spanish modules are taught through a mixture of lectures, seminars and oral group work. It should, however, be emphasised that the successful study of Law with Spanish does require a considerable amount of independent reading of texts and materials.
