What will I learn?
Modern Language Studies with TESOL This programme provides you with a thorough understanding of language itself combined with English language teaching methodology and high-level communication skills in your chosen foreign language.
Alongside your language module, year 1 will introduce you to core modules in linguistics. In year 2 language skills continue to be developed as well as knowledge of the history and contemporary society of the country whose language you are studying, plus new areas of linguistics and TESOL. Following the international placement year, you take linguistics modules designed to extend your understanding of language structure and the relationship between language and the mind, as well as studying new areas including language acquisition. TESOL modules will help you learn how to critically evaluate English language learning approaches, materials and techniques and to apply this to planning English language lessons. You can also complete a dissertation.
Modules include: • Structure of English • Introduction to Morphology and Syntax • Language, Mind and Society • Phonological Theory • Language Awareness in ELT • TESOL
Modern Languages with TESOL Language modules are designed to help you develop high-level oral and written communication skills and language proficiency by developing practical language usage as well as knowledge of contemporary society. The first year gives you an opportunity to learn about the linguistic workings of the mind, different systems of communication and how to analyse language, with specific reference to the English language. In the second year, core language skills continue to be developed as well as knowledge of the history and contemporary society of the countries whose language you are studying. TESOL modules, covering theory, teaching methodology and application, build on each other to provide essential knowledge and skills for teaching English to speakers of other languages.
Following the International Placement Year, the final year teaches you to critically evaluate English language learning approaches, materials and techniques, and to apply this to planning English language lessons. You can also complete a dissertation. At this stage you will have reached a high-level of ability in both languages studied regardless of whether you started them at beginners or post-A-level.
Modules include: • Language • Structure of English • Language, Mind and Society • Language Awareness in ELT • TESOL
How will I learn?
Linguistics and TESOL modules involve a variety of teaching and learning approaches. Linguistics lectures are supplemented by weekly seminar or workshop sessions, where students meet with tutors to work on practical tasks.
Language teaching includes a range of components such as grammar, reading and writing, oral and listening, and translation into and out of English. Language classes are taught in seminar groups for oral, written language and translation teaching, and larger traditional group lectures for content-based teaching such as history and contemporary society.
It is a requirement of the programme that (unless you are studying only EFL) you spend at least two semesters abroad in an international placement year. All EU exchanges are supported by an Erasmus grant.
Where can I get a job?
Employers are increasingly looking for graduates who can not only communicate in more than one European language, but who also have the analytical skills to deal with complex information in an international multilingual environment. Choosing languages with TESOL and linguistics modules provides you with these skills and opens up a wide range of careers in the UK and abroad. The specific focus on TESOL naturally provides the grounding for a teaching career using your languages and, in particular, for teaching English to speakers of other languages. Personal tutors can offer advice, encouragement and references.
