Music BA (Hons) Popular Musicology
What’s it about?
This programme was the first degree of its kind anywhere and investigates this vital element of our culture with an emphasis on the musical text: the sounds and symbols in the music we hear.
You will get the opportunity to study popular music thoroughly, to explore how it creates meaning, how it functions in society, and how it shapes lives. We will give you training in the analysis of musical texts and in academic writing, while interrogating popular music’s historical development, its relationship to technology, its role in the media, and its many social facets.
What will I learn?
Core modules include: • History of Popular Music • Critical Thinking and Writing • Music Theory and Analysis • Popular Music and Technology • Popular Music and the Media • Sociology of Popular Music • Research Methodology and Academic Enterprise
Optional modules include: Music Journalism, Sound/Music in Multimedia, Jazz Studies, Music and Propaganda.
How will I learn? You will be taught in small groups and therefore will receive a high level of personal attention. You will have lectures, seminars, and tutorials given by experts in the field of popular musicology. Additionally, you will have a weekly one- to-one piano lesson throughout the first year of the programme to aid your understanding of music theory.
Where can I get a job?
Achieving a good Popular Musicology degree will prepare you for a career as a music critic, academic, music journalist or teacher, among others. The programme aims to encourage students to develop their written and oral expression in a variety of ways, both scholarly and informal, and should be ideally suited for the many careers that require these important and useful skills.
