Art and Design
BA (Hons) Art and Design with Foundation Year
What’s it about?
The Foundation Year is an investigative year focusing on the full range of art and design activities. It is experimental, exciting and challenging, and you will follow a demanding curriculum delivered by a series of studio-based projects. These projects are designed to help you to realise your creative potential and you will discover your own talents and interests, developing your specialism to determine your future pathway.
With tutorial support, we will help you to make an informed choice about the course of study for your subsequent three years. On successful completion of the Foundation Year you can progress onto one of our art and design degree programmes.
What will I learn?
You will explore all art and design subjects: drawing, computing skills, 2D and 3D design, fashion, visual materials and processes, together with introductory modules in analytical and communication skills. Then you will specialise in your pathway towards a degree in Visual Art, Product Design, Interior Design, Fashion Design, Fashion Styling, Graphic Design, Design Futures, Advertising Design or Design for Digital Media.
Modules include: • Materials, Processes and Procedures • Introduction to Computing • Drawing • Critical and Theoretical Studies • Exploring Art and Design
There is an option to study overseas at a variety of European destinations. Teaching is in English and all EU exchanges are supported by an Erasmus grant.
“I learnt new drawing skills and techniques and it gave me a focus to help turn my thoughts into designs. Knowing that if I passed the Foundation I would get a place on the Product Design degree was a real bonus as the course at Salford has a great reputation in the design industry and the proximity to Manchester is fantastic.”
Andrew Bulman BA (Hons) Art and Design with Foundation Year
How will I learn? The programme is taught through various delivery methods. These include presentations, lectures, group tutorials, individual tutorials, practical projects and workshops and exercises. One-to-one tuition sessions allow you to discuss your work and ideas with your tutors.
Some modules involve a project, which provides the framework to investigate ideas and issues, utilising an appropriate selection of materials, media and working methods.
Where can I get a job?
All art and design degrees at Salford have excellent employment records with students gaining relevant employment after graduation. The careers you go into will probably depend on your specialism but previous graduates have gone on to work in multimedia design studios, as public arts officers and in PR consultancies. Graduates have worked for companies such as Virgin Interactive, Jigsaw, Frog Design and Adidas.
