What’s it about?
In today’s performance industry it is expected that professional performers will also have an understanding of, and skills in, other connected areas. These may include directing, physical theatre, design and stage management. This programme combines academic study of modern performance with the practical exploration of performance and these related skills.
What will I learn?
We aim to develop the ‘thinking performer’, capable of working in a wide variety of environments. ‘Performance’ is at the centre of the programme. Performance projects are a key feature at each level.
In year 1 all students take the same core modules. Having established the foundation stones, you will build your own unique future pathway and major projects in years 2 and 3. Key learning areas are: working independently, working as a team member, relating theory to practice and vice versa, and developing writing, presentational and performance skills.
Year 2 consists of two core theatre projects which form 30% of your work.
During your final year you will complete one major core theatre project which forms 30% of your work.
Areas of study include: • Theatre Acting • TV Acting • Radio Acting • Presenting and Scriptwriting • Stand-up Comedy • Multimedia Theatre • Choreography
How will I learn? Teaching is delivered though various methods: lectures on critical theory followed by seminars, practical classes for putting theory into practice and developing your skills, project-based work including major performance projects and tutorials and masterclasses from visiting professionals.
Students are required to be increasingly responsible for their own learning as they progress, thus preparing them for the industry. An important part of learning in this programme is to make the most of opportunities for extra-curricular activities organised by the programme team. These currently include the opportunity to audition for the graduating students’ Performers Showcase which takes place before an audience of agents and casting directors, opportunities to attend masterclasses with visiting leading professionals and networking opportunities.
Where can I get a job?
Many graduates have progressed to employment in a range of theatre and media environments. These include the BBC, ITV Granada, BBC Radio, the Royal Court, the National Theatre, the Green Room Theatre Manchester, Yorkshire Television, Hull Truck Theatre Company, the RSC, Royal Exchange Theatre Manchester and various theatre in education (TIE) companies.
Salford has a reputation for providing the industry with highly skilled and dynamic graduates, whose names can regularly be seen on television and theatre credits, both as performers and as ‘behind the scenes’ creatives. In recent years a number of graduates have successfully set up their own companies.

Programme details
Duration: Three years full-time
Average teaching contact time: Year 1: 6 weeks of workshops (5 half-days a week) otherwise 15 hours a week Year 2: 8 weeks projects (all day every day) then 9/10 hours per week Year 3: 4 weeks projects (all day every day) then 6.5 hours per week
Assessment: Your practical classes will be assessed either by an in-class presentation/assignment or a project-based performance. Your critical theory modules will be assessed by essay. You will also take part in a public performance of live theatre, in which you will be assessed on both your rehearsal process and performance
