Art and Design BA (Hons) Product Design

What’s it about?

Product designers are responsible for giving form, function and meaning to a range of products that furnish our everyday lives. Their creative and practical input provides the essential link between the consumer and the manufacturer.

We will encourage you to be creative and innovative, to integrate design with manufacturing and to develop business and marketing skills. We have strong links with numerous national and international companies and you will develop practical skills through placements and collaborative projects.

Our specialist visiting lecturers add a ‘real-world’ focus to the programme so that you gain an understanding of design in a commercial environment.

What will I learn?

Year 1 introduces you to the range of core design skills that you will need by undertaking studio-based design projects. This is supported by study of materials and manufacturing technology, product visualisation, business and marketing.

In year 2 you will undertake a number of in-depth projects, exploring product design from user, cultural and manufacturing perspectives. You will study interface design, human factors, research strategies and production processes within the context of industry linked projects. All students are actively encouraged to undertake a period of placements in year 2.

In year 3 you will complete a dissertation and two major design projects, one of which will be self-directed and tailored to the career you want to follow. You will have the opportunity to participate in the prestigious New Designers exhibition in London.

Modules include: • Design Communication • Materials and Manufacturing • Interface Design • Design for Industry • Product Design Issues
